Legal & Financial Standards

In international business, civil law, and commerce, a business day (or working day) refers to any official workday where commercial banks and financial clearing houses are open for business. In the Western world, this spans Monday through Friday, excluding statutory government holidays.

Securities Settlement (T+1)
US and European financial securities settle on a T+1 business day basis, requiring exact weekend and bank holiday skipping.
Statutory Notice Periods
Court filings, tenant notice windows, and contractual cure periods often specify business days rather than calendar days.
Supply Chain & Freight
Standard freight transit times measure active carrier operating days, excluding Sunday linehauls.

Business Days & Working Day Rules

How many business days are in a year?

A typical calendar year has 52 weeks, yielding 260 weekdays (Monday through Friday) in a non-leap year or 261 weekdays in a leap year. After deducting the standard 10 or 11 official federal/bank holidays, a normal year contains approximately 249 to 251 business days.

What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?

Under United States federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103), if a holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is treated as the observed federal holiday for government offices and banks. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the observed holiday. Our calculator automatically factors in observed holiday dates.

Does Saturday count as a business day?

In standard commercial and banking practice, Saturday is not considered a business day. However, retail businesses and shipping couriers (like USPS or FedEx Home Delivery) frequently operate on Saturdays. You can uncheck "Exclude Weekends" if you operate on a 6-day or 7-day schedule.
